Industry solution ConnectSensePower

Fiber, sensing and storage for power grids, pipelines and utilities

Utilities and pipeline operators use light in three ways, and Optics Valley makes all of them: fiber cable that rides on power lines (OPGW and ADSS), distributed fiber sensing that measures temperature, strain and vibration along cables, pipelines and tunnels, and storage that steadies the grid. ZeroLine supplies them as one project, tested in Wuhan and commissioned on site.

What is distributed fiber sensing?

A sensing unit sends light pulses down an ordinary optical fiber and reads the light scattered back, turning the whole fiber into a sensor. Distributed temperature sensing (DTS) finds hot spots on power cables or in tunnels; distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) hears digging, leaks or intrusion along pipelines and fences.

Can you use fiber already in the ground?

Often, yes: a spare fiber in an existing cable can carry the sensing signal. We check its type, length and losses before we design the system.

What is the difference between OPGW and ADSS?

OPGW replaces the earth wire at the top of a transmission tower and carries fibers inside it; ADSS is an all-dielectric cable hung on poles or towers below the conductors. OPGW suits new or re-strung transmission lines, ADSS adding fiber to existing lines.
